Allegiant, Sun Country merger reshapes SWFL air travel

Allegiant Air and Sun Country Airlines agreed to combine in a deal that would create one of the nation’s largest leisure-focused carriers, a move with direct implications for Southwest Florida, where both airlines already play a significant role in connecting the region to Midwestern and Northeastern markets.

The proposed merger, announced Jan. 11, would bring together two carriers built around serving price-sensitive leisure travelers and underserved cities. Allegiant plans to acquire Sun Country in a cash-and-stock transaction valuing Sun Country at about $1.5 billion. The combined airline would serve roughly 22 million passengers annually across nearly 175 cities.

Southwest Florida stands out as a rare overlap market for both carriers. Allegiant and Sun Country each operate at Punta Gorda Airport, which has grown into a major low-cost gateway for the region. The airlines serve more than 40 cities nonstop from Punta Gorda, with routes heavily concentrated in the Midwest and Northeast. Key markets include Minneapolis–St. Paul, Des Moines, Iowa; Appleton, Wisconsin; Allentown, Pennsylvania; Cincinnati and Pittsburgh, reflecting Punta Gorda’s role as a seasonal and leisure-oriented hub.

The airlines also overlap at Southwest Florida International Airport in Lee County. Allegiant currently flies nonstop from RSW to Allentown, Appleton, Wisconsin and Des Moines. Sun Country serves Upper Midwest markets from RSW, including Wisconsin markets Appleton, Eau Claire, Madison and Milwaukee and Minneapolis–St. Paul, one of the carrier’s primary bases.

“This combination is an exciting next chapter in Allegiant and Sun Country’s shared mission in providing affordable, reliable, and convenient service from underserved communities to premier leisure destinations,” said Gregory C. Anderson, Allegiant’s CEO.

Sun Country President and CEO Jude Bricker said the merger builds on the airline’s 43-year history and strengthens its ability to compete. “We are two customer-centric organizations, deeply committed to delivering affordable travel experiences without compromising on quality,” Bricker said.

Nationally, the combined airline would operate about 195 aircraft and more than 650 routes, blending Allegiant’s strength in small and midsize markets with Sun Country’s presence in larger cities and international leisure destinations. The deal also unites diversified revenue streams, including Sun Country’s cargo operations and charter contracts.

Allegiant expects the merger to generate $140 million in annual synergies within three years of closing and to be accretive to earnings in the first year after completion. The combined company would be headquartered in Las Vegas while maintaining a significant presence in Minneapolis–St. Paul.

The transaction, subject to regulatory approval and shareholder votes, is expected to close in the second half of 2026. For Southwest Florida travelers, the merger signals the potential for expanded leisure connectivity, particularly to Midwest and Northeast cities that have fueled growth at both PGD and RSW.
