A new wine and tapas bar serving Basque Country cuisine from northern Spain and southern France recently opened at Prado in Bonita Springs.

El Basque Vin & Pintxo Bar had a soft opening a few weeks ago in the intimate former space of Le Troquet’s restaurant adjacent to Prado Stadium 12 movie theater at U.S. 41 and Chamber of Commerce Drive. El Basque is a sister restaurant from the same owners of Bodega Olé, which serves paella, sangria and Spanish cuisine in Old Naples.

“I have two great chefs at both places and we are expanding our restaurant group,” said John Colón, co-owner of El Basque and Bodega Olé, which recently doubled its size with an adjacent unit on Fourth Avenue North.

El Basque, pronounced “bask,” serves authentic pintxos, which basically are tapas or appetizers on skewers or toothpicks. Pintxos, which means “spikes” in Spanish, are especially common in Spain’s northern Basque Country. El Basque imports all of its meats and cheeses from France and Spain.

Our team is looking forward to transporting you to the modern-day borders of Spain and France through Basque’s unique cuisine and atmosphere,” Colón said. “It’s a very interesting cuisine. No one else is doing it here. We are excited about doing it.”

For lunch and brunch, El Basque features dishes such as croque monsieur, croque madame, a toasty baguette with olive tapenade and boquerones, Basque-style soups and salads, and sandwiches filled with French and Spanish cheeses and hams, tuna salad, chicken or the fish du jour. El Basque’s dinner menu has traditional Basque stews and dishes such as Basque-style chicken, pan-seared duck breast, mountain hams and sausages, steak frites and bacala, salted cod prepared with potatoes, tomato and herbs.

Libations include imported wines, ciders, fresh sangrias and craft concoctions such as the San Sebastian sparkling cocktail, which consists of Champagne, elderflower and a Maraschino cherry.

El Basque, 25245 Chamber of Commerce Drive, is open for lunch 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, for dinner 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 4 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and for brunch 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Happy hour is 4 to 6 p.m. daily with discounts on beer, wine and pintxos.

Seating is available indoors or outdoors. For reservations call 239-301-4973 or go to ElBasque.com.
