As residents continue to move into Florida, the construction industry is trying to keep up.

About 212,000 new single-family housing units were authorized in Florida in 2022, the second most behind Texas, according to an analysis of U.S. Census data by Construction Coverage. The rate of new construction authorizations in the Sunshine State per 1,000 existing homes (21.1) is nearly double the national rate (11.7). At a rate of 50 new houses per 1,000 existing, Punta Gorda had the second highest rate in the country behind The Villages. Although new construction has cooled since its peak in 2021, it was still up about 13% nationwide and nearly 30% in Florida last year compared to 2020.
