Everglades memorial restored to honor 1996 ValuJet crash victims

A restored sign marks the entrance to the Flight 592 Memorial in the Everglades, honoring the 110 lives lost in the 1996 ValuJet crash.

Volunteers gathered in the Everglades to restore the memorial honoring the 110 victims of ValuJet Flight 592, which crashed on May 11, 1996. Over the years, the site became overgrown and weathered, prompting a community-led cleanup to preserve its legacy. The concrete monument, designed by University of Miami architecture students, features pillars representing each life lost. Former ValuJet pilot Tommie Benefield and architect Juan Collao, who both have personal connections to the tragedy, helped lead the effort. Collao, a recipient of a scholarship established in memory of one of the victims, said maintaining the site keeps their memory alive, WINK News reports.
