Initial unemployment claims in Florida edged higher during the week ending Sept. 19 but remained below 6,000 for the fourth consecutive week. The U.S. Department of Labor estimated 5,130 initial claims were filed in the state, up from a revised 5,013 for the week ending Sept. 12. Florida has averaged 5,880 new claims per week since the beginning of 2026. Nationally, initial claims declined by 1,000 to 197,000 for the week ending Sept. 19. The latest figures follow an increase in Florida’s unemployment rate to 4.5% in August, representing about 502,000 unemployed Floridians in a labor force of 11.1 million.
