Florida Amendment 3 falls short of 60% support in new poll

A new statewide poll commissioned by Associated Industries of Florida found 53% of likely voters support Amendment 3, below the 60% required for passage Nov. 3. The proposed constitutional amendment would expand homestead property tax exemptions and reduce the cap on annual assessment increases for non-homestead properties, potentially reducing local government tax revenue by $11.8 billion annually once fully implemented.

A new statewide poll shows Florida's Amendment 3 falling short of the 60% voter approval required for passage Nov. 3. The Associated Industries of Florida-commissioned survey found 53% support, 28% opposition and 19% undecided. The proposal would increase the homestead exemption for nonschool property taxes to $250,000 by 2028 and reduce the annual assessment growth cap on non-homestead properties to 5%. State economists estimate the changes would reduce local government property tax revenue by $11.8 billion annually once fully implemented. McLaughlin & Associates surveyed 800 likely voters Sept. 28-Oct. 1, with a 3.5-percentage-point margin of error. Support was strongest among Republicans at 68%, compared with 32% among Democrats.
