Lee County to redevelop San Carlos Island with new boat ramp

Lee County commissioners approved the purchase of a vacant lot on San Carlos Island to build a new public boat ramp, addressing limited access for local boaters. Commissioner David Mulicka said the project will use federal, state and local funding to create a standalone facility. While some residents welcome easier access, others expressed concerns about affordability and preserving the island’s laid-back atmosphere. Salty Sam’s Marina supports the ramp, anticipating it will attract more boaters. Some in the seafood industry worried about impacts on the shrinking shrimp fleet, but Mulicka reassured that separate funding remains in place to rebuild docks and waterfront infrastructure. The project still requires permits, design and roadwork before construction begins, WINK News reports.
