A roadside sign marks the entrance to Naples Airport, which is operated by the Naples Airport Authority and receives no local taxpayer funding.
The city of Naples sued the Naples Airport Authority and Collier County Supervisor of Elections over control of city-owned airport property. The lawsuit challenges a new state law replacing City Council appointments to the authority's board with elections. Naples argues the change invalidates its existing lease, under which the authority pays $1 annually through 2068, because the agreement depended on city oversight. Negotiations over a new lease and subsequent mediation ended without an agreement. City officials rejected the authority's request for an option to purchase the property. The lawsuit also could affect plans to elect authority board members in November, WINK News reports.
