Punta Gorda has streamlined its historic preservation rules, making it easier for property owners to add or remove properties from the city's Local Register of Historic Places. City Council unanimously approved amendments to the Historic Overlay District regulations Sept. 23, including a six-month period for owners to opt in or out of the local register. The changes also require real estate agents to disclose a property's historic designation to buyers and require Historic Preservation Board review of demolition or relocation applications. The revisions follow complications faced by owners of historic properties damaged by recent hurricanes. Council rejected a proposed change that would have required Historic Preservation Board approval before a Certificate of Appropriateness application could move forward.
