Seminole Gulf Railway began renewing 11.5 miles of track between Fort Ogden in DeSoto County and Cleveland in Charlotte County, a project aimed at supporting heavier train loads and higher speeds. The $18.2 million upgrade — funded through a $9.6 million federal Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements grant, a $4.3 million contribution from Florida DOT District 1 and additional self-financing from the railroad — will take about 18 months to complete. Improvements include installing heavy-weight rail and replacing decayed timber ties with steel ties to increase reliability, weather resiliency, environmental benefits and maintenance efficiency. Seminole Gulf operates from North Naples to Arcadia, connecting with the CSX railroad, and transports key regional materials, including building supplies, aggregates, LPG, plastics and recyclables.
