Nearly 1,000 people participated in the annual Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk at Florida SouthWestern State College in Fort Myers, raising a record $75,000. The Sept. 12 event benefited the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which supports first responders, military personnel and their families. The foundation was established in honor of New York City firefighter Stephen Siller, who died responding to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The Fort Myers event included a ceremony with bagpipers and displays of a steel and concrete piece from the World Trade Center and a fire truck destroyed in the attacks.
