Collier Mosquito Control District performed its first treatments in the Naples Reserve community and the areas surrounding Six Ls Farm and Tomato roads last week. These treatments were made possible by Florida House Bill 509, which went into effect Oct. 1.
HB 509 brings in communities such as Port of the Islands, Ave Maria, Naples Reserve and other recently developed areas east and north of Golden Gate Estates. The new boundaries also account for areas approved for development, allowing those residents to receive services the day they move into their new homes. Ave Maria previously received services as part of an interlocal agreement.
The Legislature created the district as the Naples Mosquito Control District in 1950, serving downtown Naples with a single truck.
Over the last 74 years, the district has continued to expand. In a 2022 referendum, 71% of affected residents voted to expand the district from its current 401 square miles to an area encompassing 730 square miles.
