Charlotte County Commissioners gave the go-ahead to expand an existing self-storage facility in Port Charlotte.

Extra Space Storage, a three-story storage facility built in 2018 at 4536 Tamiami Trail next to Pioneers Pizza, needs extra space to accommodate customer demand, said architect David M. Davenport, who represented the owner of the facility.

Davenport asked for a zoning change from Charlotte Harbor Commercial to Charlotte Harbor Mixed Use on the property’s site, which was granted at the meeting. The zoning change paved the way for the facility to add a one-story, 16,000-square-foot enclosed addition, which is currently being used for open space residential vehicle slip rentals.

The current total square footage of the facility is 105,000 square feet, and demand has been great with occupancy at 95% to 99%, Davenport said. There would be no change to the stormwater configuration, Planning and Zoning official Shaun Cullinan said.
