Nearly a dozen flights were canceled Monday and nearly 75 flights were delayed at Southwest Florida International Airport following the cancellation of hundreds of flights across the country on Sunday and over the Christmas weekend due to winter weather and airlines staff calling out sick. The COVID-19 omicron variant stopped many travelers from making it home for the holidays. Issues were not limited to a few airlines. On Monday, Alaska, American, JetBlue, Southwest and United airlines canceled arriving flights from airports in Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Newark, New York and Seattle. American, JetBlue, Southwest and United canceled departing flights for destinations such as Columbus, Dallas, Denver, Newark and New York. Delays changed times for more than 50 arriving flights and nearly 20 departing flights Monday morning at RSW, airport data shows.
