After deferring the closing on a 50-acre parcel of land for a potential new solid waste recycling facility March 5, Lee County commissioners approved closing on the property at its regular April 16 meeting. The facility was first met with substantial pushback from residents, considering its proximity to the Pelican Preserve community. However, following direction from commissioners March 5, county staff hosted two meetings to address resident’s concerns. County Manager Dave Harner said the concerns expressed by residents were ensuring the 1,025-foot buffer remained in perpetuity, continued public input throughout design and ensuring the county will address concerns throughout construction. Harner said staff believes that by continuing public meetings, the county can address concerns as the process moves forward.
