Sanibel City Council unanimously voted Monday to change building codes for future property projects, increasing the height requirement from 35 feet above grade to 45 feet above sea level. The update to the building codes was prompted by Hurricane Ian, which devastated the island more than 13 months ago. Mayor Richard Johnson said the change was needed to build back a more resilient community and is consistent with the Sanibel Plan, WINK News reports.Â
