Naples-based Hoffmann Family of Companies closed this month on the Old Corkscrew Golf Club and the adjacent Cottages at Old Corkscrew in two real estate transactions totaling $19 million.

“We officially closed on Old Corkscrew,” said Naples billionaire David Hoffmann, founder of Hoffmann Family of Companies. “We also bought the adjoining land next to Old Corkscrew, about 20 acres where we’re going to develop.”

Hoffmann Old Corkscrew Golf Club LLC acquired Old Corkscrew Golf Club in Estero for $14.5 million from Old Corkscrew Development Group LLC, the recorded deed shows. Although Hoffmann announced the sale last fall, it didn’t actually close until last Friday.

Also closing April 1, Hoffmann purchased the Cottages at Old Corkscrew Golf Club for $4.5 million, Lee County property records show. The residential and golf properties are on the south side of Corkscrew Road about seven miles east of Interstate 75 exit 123.

Old Corkscrew Golf Club, 17320 Corkscrew Road, broke ground in June 2014 on what was initially planned to be 25 luxury golf cottages, but only one cottage actually was built on the cul-de-sac. The two-story, 3,300-square-foot residence at 16999 Dormie Drive has four private master suites, indoor and outdoor kitchens and a loft. The acreage is surrounded by a wooded area and wetlands.

Hoffmann would like to build more homes on the 18.69 acres but those plans are not definite. “That parcel’s a gold mine,” said Mark Iwinski, general manager of Old Corkscrew Golf Club. “David saw the sky’s the limit with that property.”

The new owners have made a few changes already at Old Corkscrew Golf Club, which features Southwest Florida’s only standalone Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course. The par-72 championship course was established in 2007 on 275 wooded acres in unincorporated Lee County.

Improvements and renovations can be seen throughout the property, which has an extensive and complete practice facility complementing a course that “provides an exhilarating and unspoiled golf experience,” said Hoffmann National Golf Division President Iain Mossman, who oversees Old Corkscrew, Old Collier Golf Club in North Naples and another Hoffmann course in Augusta, Missouri.

The majority of the planned maintenance work will take place during the June 6-30 temporary closing of the course. From the entry road off Corkscrew Road to the clubhouse, all areas are receiving either new landscaping, resurfacing or fresh paint. This summer, a major clearing and trimming of trees and underbrush impeding line of sight and course playability are planned. Grass will be replaced on and near greens and around many tees

Course conditioning is a priority of the new owner and tee times are booked at 10-minute intervals,” Mossman said. “A new annual membership program is being introduced. Benefits include guest privileges and being able to make advance reservations.”

Old Corkscrew also eventually plans to move forward with a true clubhouse, which was planned years ago but not constructed. Its pad overlooks a lake between the 10th and 18th holes. “That’s definitely in the future plans,” Mossman said. “We don’t have a timetable. I think we want to get a season under our belt to assess. That gives us time to plan for the future.”

Even Old Corkscrew’s logo has been rebranded. The golf club’s former stylized rendering of an eagle has been replaced by a realistic corkscrew, a reminder that Hoffmann’s portfolio also includes wineries and creating wine destinations.
