Wayne Wiles Floor Coverings celebrated the opening of its new Port Charlotte location Sept. 16 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, marking another milestone for the fourth-generation family business that serves Charlotte, Collier, Lee and Sarasota counties.

Owner Mark Wiles purchased the company from his father, Wayne Wiles, in 2008, continuing a legacy that began when the elder Wiles founded the business in 1985. The family’s history in flooring stretches back even further, as Mark Wiles’ grandfather started in the industry more than 75 years ago.

Now, the company is preparing for its next chapter. Mark Wiles recently welcomed his son, Weston, a business graduate, into the company to represent the fourth generation of family leadership.

The business has weathered ups and downs in the regional economy. When Mark Wiles took over in 2008, the real estate downturn was at its worst in Southwest Florida. But as construction activity returned, demand for flooring grew. Today, Wayne Wiles Floor Coverings supplies many of the area’s builders, particularly in fast-growing communities, such as West Port in Charlotte County and Wellen Park in Sarasota County.

The company already operated in Charlotte County’s Murdock section but needed more space to serve a growing client base. That led Wiles to purchase land near Toledo Blade Boulevard, where he developed the new store at 416 Dexter St. The Port Charlotte site will eventually feature a showroom similar to those at the company’s headquarters in Fort Myers and its North Naples location.

The company’s service area stretches from Exit 100 on Interstate 75 in Naples to Exit 207 in Sarasota.

A longtime member of the Charlotte County Chamber of Commerce and the Charlotte DeSoto Building Industry Association, the company also supports local nonprofits. While most of its work comes from builders, Wayne Wiles Floor Coverings also serves residential customers upgrading their homes.

Flooring trends have shifted over time. Luxury vinyl has dominated the market in recent years, though ceramic, laminate and wood remain in demand. Carpet, once the most common choice, has been bolstered by new, more durable textiles.

The company regularly shares industry insights with customers. A recent blog post, for example, highlighted the benefits of ceramic tile as water- and flood-resistant and easy to clean, a key feature in Southwest Florida.

Although new home construction has slowed in 2025, Wiles expects activity to rebound, particularly if the region avoids major storms this hurricane season. Remodeling remains strong, with many homeowners choosing to replace flooring as part of their renovation projects.
