Only rubble remains of Bonair Towers, once the tallest building in Fort Myers.
Chris-Tel Construction began demolishing the 11-story building, which is managed by the Fort Myers Housing Authority, in September and finished the work last week.
The tower, overlooking the fifth hole of Fort Myers Country Club, was built in 1965 as segregated housing for whites only. It later became a refuge for senior citizens in need of affordable housing.
Residents living in the building’s 101 units began relocating last year. Housing officials said residents will be given the opportunity to return once new housing is constructed on the site.
Only debris remains at the Bonair Towers site in Fort Myers after Chris-Tel Construction completed the demolition of the former 101-unit affordable housing tower.
The Housing Authority issued only a written statement, noting that specific redevelopment details are still being finalized.
“Plans are in development for modern, updated affordable housing that will continue to serve residents and the broader community,” the release said.
