Suffolk builds AI into RSW terminal expansion

Suffolk Construction’s Jobsite of the Future space supports the company’s AI work on the $1.2 billion Phase 2 Terminal Expansion project at Southwest Florida International Airport. The RSW project is one of eight Suffolk jobsites nationwide with the designation.

Artificial intelligence could reduce construction costs by 17% to 20% and shorten project timelines by 22% to 25%, according to a new study by Suffolk, a Boston-based construction company with a Southwest Florida office in Estero, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The findings are based on a model of a $179 million multifamily development in San Francisco, rather than verified savings across completed projects. Researchers identified six areas where AI could improve efficiency: design automation, offsite manufacturing, permitting, scheduling, skilled labor coordination and procurement. The study also estimates that integrating these technologies could increase developers' unlevered investment returns by 5 to 6 percentage points. Researchers cautioned that additional project data and research are needed to validate the projections and assess their broader applicability.
