Lee commissioner discusses hurricane recovery funding changes

Lee County Commissioner Brian Hamman speaks during a Feb. 17 meeting where the board approved a public comment period on proposed amendments to hurricane recovery funding plans.

Lee County commissioners voted Feb. 17 to publish proposed amendments to the county’s Hurricane Ian and Hurricanes Helene and Milton Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Recovery action plans for a 30-day public comment period.

Lee County received $1.1 billion for Hurricane Ian recovery and about $100.7 million for the 2024 storms. The amendments allow changes to program policies and funding allocations as recovery needs shift, including making funds interchangeable between programs to address funding gaps.

The proposal also includes a $2.4 million increase for the Sanibel Captiva Road and Captiva Drive resiliency project to repair Blind Pass Bridge, a key evacuation route for about 194 Captiva Island households.
