Charlotte County scheduled three meetings to solicit public input regarding the former Cultural Center facility in Port Charlotte. The meetings follow a survey the county posted on its website, asking the public to indicate which activities, classes, events, shows and other things it would like to have at the Cultural Center on Aaron Street, which closed in November 2021. Doors were shut after the nonprofit running the center, which has been a mainstay in the county for more than six decades, ran out of money. Prior to its closing the nonprofit board asked the county for $300,000 to continue running it, but the county declined and the center was closed. Public outcry caused the county to consider taking over the popular venue. Then Hurricane Ian hit and caused damages to some parts of the building beyond repair. The meetings are scheduled for 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Nov. 14 at Punta Gorda Charlotte Library, 401 Shreve St.; 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Nov. 15 at Family Services Center, 21500 Gibralter Drive in Port Charlotte; and 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Tringali Community Center, 3460 North Access Road in Englewood. The center rented the county-owned facility for $1 per year with a 40-year lease signed in 2000. Prior to that the county invested more than $6 million in renovations and an expansion of the facility with a 1% local option sales tax that voters approved
