FORT MYERS SURVEY TO HELP DECIDE FUNDING ALLOCATION FOR LOW-INCOME FAMILIES

Community members can help decide how hundreds of thousands of dollars are used to help neighbors make ends meet. The city of Fort Myers sent out a survey asking how it should allocate $600,000 for low-income families. The city says it wants to prioritize efforts such as assisting the homeless, retaining housing stock, and increasing the availability of affordable housing, WINK News reports.

JURY TRIALS WILL RESUME THIS MONTH IN LEE COUNTY 

The Lee Clerk of Courts said Tuesday that juror summons will be issued again starting Sept. 14 and jury trials will restart this month in Lee County. Prospective jurors will undergo health screenings including temperature checks before entering the courthouse. Face coverings will be required inside the building, WINK News reports. “If you are selected to serve as a juror, please be assured that your health and well-being remain our first priority. Jurors will be processed efficiently with all social distancing requirements being followed throughout their service,” says Linda Doggett, Lee County Clerk of Courts.

GREATER NAPLES FIRE DISTRICT PLANS NEW BUILDINGS TO CUT RESCUE RESPONSE TIMES

Minutes can save lives and property when it comes to fire response, especially in a rural area such as Golden Gate Estates. The Greater Naples Fire Rescue District is trying to tackle its response times, the biggest battle in that rural area. The fire district is teaming up with Collier Emergency Medical Services to open two new fire stations in the Estates. The move-in goal is next month for one being constructed on Lord’s Way off Collier Boulevard. Another building near Desoto and Golden Gate boulevards is still in the early planning phases. Collier EMS expects that completion of both buildings will help reduce response times by as much as 15 minutes, WINK News reports.

LEE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD APPROVES POLICY FOR HEALTH CRISIS RESPONSE

The School District of Lee County approved a long-term emergency requirement for protective gear Tuesday. Students, teachers and staff all must wear face coverings in district buildings now during the pandemic. The new emergency policy says the district follows the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention and Florida Department of Health guidelines during any pandemic or infectious disease situation in the future. The policy goes into effect immediately for 90 days. After that, the school board can vote to make it permanent, WINK News reports.
 

MORAN PARTNERS WITH BARRON’S TO SPONSOR FINANCIAL EDUCATION SERVICES AT FGCU

LEE HEALTH EXPANDED OBSTETRICS OPERATING ROOM SET TO OPEN THIS WEEK

This week, Lee Health’s newly renovated obstetrics operating room is set to open at HealthPark Medical Center. The grand opening marks the completion of the final phase of the OB service line expansion project. The overall expansion is a result of the health system’s commitment to better serve the community by creating a more personalized and comfortable experience for expectant families. This phase of the expansion includes the addition of eight new pre- and post-op light-filled private rooms each with a bathroom, shower, sliding glass doors with privacy curtains and wood cabinets for patient belongings and patient supplies. High tech electronic computer boards provide staff members with up to the minute statuses on patient conditions, and the addition of a physician break room will enhance downtime for providers. D.R. Horton Southwest Florida is now selling in Meadowood, a new Express Homes community of townhomes. Wilderness Country Club hires Duchene

Wilderness Country Club in Naples has appointed Susan Duchene as its new membership and communications director. In this role, she is responsible for all membership and marketing communications, including repositioning the member-owned country club in the local marketplace and expanding membership opportunities. Duchene is a seasoned marketing professional with more than 20 years of experience in various industries, including retail, banking, medical and non-profit. She has helped improve marketing and advertising efforts for both large Fortune 500 companies and small businesses, including positions in both agency and corporate-client environments. Duchene most recently served as a senior marketing specialist for FreeStar Financial Credit Union in Clinton Township, Michigan. Before that, she was a marketing contractor for Space Coast Credit Union in Melbourne, Florida. Duchene graduated from Western Michigan University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a major in marketing.

Collier County food pantry leaders address hunger crisis

In an effort to address and resolve the hunger crisis in our community, Greater Naples Leadership (GNL) has brought together the leaders of three food pantry organizations in Collier County to co-author a guest commentary available for viewing here. These leaders are Vann Ellison, CEO of St. Matthew’s House, Steve Popper, CEO of Meals of Hope and Richard LeBer, CEO of Harry Chapin Food Bank.  All three presented their mission in a webinar to GNL members on Aug. 18, outlining the growing need for volunteers as well as food donations to reach those most in need of food during this pandemic. GNL is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing proven leaders with a unique opportunity to learn firsthand about Collier County’s challenges and to encourage the use of their skills individually and collectively in addressing these needs and bettering the community. DeVoe gives more than $65,000 back to local economy

The DeVoe Automotive Group has concluded its “Let’s Get Southwest Florida Rolling Again” campaign and purchased over $65,000 in gift cards to locally owned Southwest Florida businesses. The promotion started mid-May and concluded on July 31.  For each vehicle sold during the promotion, DeVoe purchased a $200 gift certificate to the customer’s choice of any locally owned business in Southwest Florida.  DeVoe Automotive Group is a multi-generational business that was started by Richard H. DeVoe in 1968.  The business sells and services Cadillac, Buick, GMC and Subaru vehicles.

A limited number of $100 tickets will be sold during the month of September for a chance to receive 30 bottles of more than $1,300 worth of wine and liquor. Chamber, FRLA partner on mask giveaway

The Sanibel & Captiva Islands Chamber of Commerce is partnering with the Florida Restaurant & Lodging Association (FRLA) in a program to distribute reusable face masks to the local business community starting this week. FRLA Southwest Director Lois Croft delivered the washable cotton masks to the chamber on Aug. 31, as part of an effort to distribute 50,000 masks throughout Lee, Collier, and Charlotte counties. They are available now to pick up or request for delivery. Businesses do not need to be a chamber or FRLA member to pick up or request delivery on up to 40 masks per business, said John Lai, chamber president and chief executive officer.
