COLLIER COUNTY DISTRICT APPROVES BACK-TO-SCHOOL PLAN

Collier County Public Schools announced reopening plans Wednesday for the 2020-21 school year, which begins Aug. 19. Parents can choose from four different learning options: in-person class, homeschooling, and structured or flexible options for eCollier Academy. The district says students can revert to distance learning at any time if needed, WINK News reports. A registration form for the free academy is available here.

THREE SWFL COMMUNITIES VOTE AGAINST MASK MANDATES

Three local government entities in Southwest Florida voted against mask mandates Tuesday for a pandemic precaution. Collier and Charlotte county commission boards both voted 3-2 and Bonita Springs City Council voted 4-3 to deny recommendations for mandatory face coverings in their respective communities. Collier commissioners said the resolution still stands that they approved a few weeks ago strongly encouraging people to wear masks in public. At their July 28 meeting, Charlotte commissioners will consider a non-binding resolution encouraging people to wear masks in public. Mask mandates already are in place in Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel and Punta Gorda. Read the full story here.

HODGES PRESIDENT ELECTED TO ICUF EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

Dr. John Meyer, president of Hodges University, was elected as treasurer for the Independent Colleges and Universities of Florida (ICUF) executive committee and as treasurer of ICUF’s Foundation. His term is for two years. ICUF consists of 30 private colleges and universities that serve 156,000 students statewide. Together, these institutions award 30% of the bachelor’s degrees and 40% of the master’s degrees and PhDs annually. ICUF colleges and universities have nearly $1.2 billion in assets with annual operating budgets of $6.1 billion with 38,000 employees.

CONCOURSE C AT RSW REOPENED WEDNESDAY

The Lee County Port Authority reopened Concourse C at Southwest Florida International Airport on Wednesday morning. All departing and arriving flights for Delta Air Lines and United Airlines at RSW will resume operations in Concourse C. All passengers for Delta and United should proceed to Concourse C for security screening and flights. Ticketing and check-in remain the same. For more information, visit flylcpa.com.

FORT MYERS CITY LEADERS VOTE AGAINST MASK MANDATE

After a long meeting Thursday afternoon, a proposed mask mandate failed 4-3 to pass Fort Myers City Council. Councilman Kevin Anderson made a motion to encourage businesses to mandate masks in their stores, like what Costco is doing during the coronavirus pandemic. Council members Gail Antony, Fred Burson, Kevin Anderson and Mayor Randy Henderson voted no. “This is an act of taking personal freedoms away from the United States citizens and that’s something I object to,” Henderson said. Sanibel, Fort Myers Beach and Punta Gorda all require masks to be worn when entering buildings and other indoor areas, WINK News reports.
